Extermital Termite & Pest Control says the most common species of stinging insects include hornets, yellow jackets, wasps and bees.

The National Pest Management Association reports that stinging insects send more than a half a million people to the emergency room each year. And those will allergies are more at risk, although anyone can be stung.

According to the experts at Extermitalyellow jackets can be found anywhere. They have paper carton nests that are found both above and below ground, and often venture hundreds of feet away from their nest There are several species of yellow jackets, all of which typically have a yellow and black head along with a patterned abdomen. They are most active in later summer and early fall.

Hornets live in colonies with 100 to 400 members, and they are the most active during the day. They appear late in the summer, and unlike other stinging insects, they don’t reuse the same nests from one season to the next. Hornets build paper nests at least three feet or more off the ground and their nests are commonly found in trees, shrubs and overhangs.

Wasps usually build their nests in and around homes, and their nests often hang from trees, porches or under decks. They build umbrella shaped nests with open cells, and that’s where they lay their eggs. Emerging in the spring, they have a similar body shape to yellow jackets, but wasps are mostly brown.

Bees gather pollen and nectar from flowers to feed their colonies, and if they feel threatened, they’ll attack. Bees live in small colonies, and they build their nests in unsuspected places like tires, mailboxes and overturned flowerpots. Common symptoms from a bee string can include pain and swelling. Some people can have a more severe reaction to a sting.

Stinging insects can typically be identified by their physical appearance, however, homeowners can recognize the different species from a safe distance by identifying their nests.
